COCKPIT DRILL

The Cockpit Drill is the first thing you do when you get in to drive a car for the first time. The routine is Doors, Seat, Steering Wheel, Seatbelt, Mirrors and it is your responsibility to make sure the drivers area is set up to suit you. DSSSM is literally the first thing you will learn on your first Driving Lesson.

Get ahead of your lessons by learning this before your first driving lesson with your Driving Instructor.

Note: the Cockpit Drill is the same for pretty much any car including manual or automatic car.

CONTROLS AND INSTRUMENTS

In this Driving Tutorial video it's Marcus' first lesson so he is learning the Controls and Instruments in the cockpit. These are the basics beginners learn on their first Driving Lesson with Instructor.

MOVING OFF AND STOPPING

Typically in your first or second driving lesson, moving off and stopping covers the POM routine; Prepare, Observe, Move, clutch control and basic movement of a car to move off an stop safely.

In this video we'll be looking at clutch control on a manual car, understanding biting point and finding a reference point on your car for lining up your wheels with the kerb and when to turn the steering wheel.

ROAD POSITION

Having safe Road Positioning and using the correct Reference Points while driving is a necessary technique that will help you drive harmlessly both before and after you pass your UK Practical Driving Test.

In this Driving Tutorial, Francis The Instructor demonstrates how to identify the reference points on your vehicle, manoeuvre down narrow roads, and have the safest road position while driving.

USING MIRRORS WHILST DRIVING

In this Driving Tutorial video you'll learn how to set your mirrors and use mirrors while driving. These are the mirror basics beginners learn on their first Driving Lessons with an Instructor.

You will learn about setting car Side Mirrors aka Wing Mirrors and setting Centre Mirror aka Rear View Mirror. Then also about using side mirrors and rear view mirror while driving.

WHEN TO SIGNAL AND INDICATING

In this Driving Tutorial Francis The Instructor covers the use of signals, when to signal you are turning and when not to signal. The general rule is for the driver to always question “will this signal be more helpful or misleading to others?” before indicating.

This video is the basics that you should learn in your early driving lessons about signalling. Remember, it’s not just your indicators that tell others what your intentions are, the positioning of your vehicle is also a big signal to other drivers.

HOW TO STEER A CAR PROPERLY

In this video you'll learn how to steer a car properly and start to master steering wheel control including when to steer back. You should start learning to hold the steering wheel with hands at 10 and 2 on clock. Then use the pull push steering method where you feed the wheel. After you're comfortable at the wheel you'll find your preferred method of steering. Remember, the test examiner is looking for 3 things with steering:

  1. Are you in control of the car?

  2. Is the car going where you want it to?

  3. Are you safely in control of the steering wheel?

APPROPRIATE DRIVING SPEEDS

In this Driving Tutorial video Driving Instructor Francis gives an overview of Appropriate Speeds that you should learn in your driving lessons that you will need to know on your Driving Test. Francis also drives through real life sample situations along with commentary driving.

Factors that effect your appropriate driving speed are mainly:

  1. Visibility - how much can you see down the road?

  2. Pedestrians - are there pedestrians near the road?

  3. Weather - what are the current weather conditions?

  4. Road Width - how wide is the road? Remember, less space, less speed.

  5. Landmarks - are you near any schools, playgrounds or zebra crossings?

Remember, the Speed Limit is NOT a target speed, it's the absolute maximum speed IF the road conditions are perfect.

APPROACHING AND EMERGING JUNCTIONS - TURNING LEFT AND RIGHT

In this Driving Tutorial video Driving Instructor Francis covers the basics you'll learn about Junctions in your driving lessons. The key to Junctions is to remember your approach procedure:

MIRROR - SIGNAL - POSITION - SPEED - LOOK

In this tutorial you will learn about the road markings at Junctions, the road rules, when to turn into a road, which car has the right of way or priority, what cutting corners means, what the Give Way sign means and the difference between open and closed junctions.

BASIC ROUNDABOUTS

Roundabouts and roundabout driving rules in the UK have many layers so we have a few videos with 'Basic Roundabouts' being the beginners introduction to roundabouts.

In this video we'll be looking at using signals on roundabouts, approaching roundabouts, who has priority at roundabouts and following road signs, sat-nav or verbal directions... whether in your driving lessons or on your driving test.

Key things to learn for roundabouts are how to indicate and where to position yourself taking into account the direction you are going in and the roundabout exit number. eg turning right at roundabout which would most commonly be the 3rd exit.

MEETING TRAFFIC SITUATIONS

If you are driving on a road too narrow for 2 cars driving in opposite directions to pass each other because of parked cars then the car whose lane is impeded with the stationary vehicle/s should give way. However, if there are vehicles on both sides then you are now in a Meeting Situation and are part of Meeting Traffic.

In this Driving Tutorial video you will learn how to handle meeting traffic in double parked streets using Acceleration Sense, the Hold Back Position, giving adequate clearance, driving priority rules and LADA: Look Assess Decide Act.

ANTICIPATION AND PLANNING

Awareness, anticipation and planning while driving will help you expect, see and avoid potential hazards on the road. The more you practise, the more you'll be able to identify hazards; something that will or MIGHT happen that could cause you to slow down, change direction or stop.

In this driving tutorial video we'll look at the importance of anticipation and planning while driving, how looking ahead for possible hazards from what other road users and pedestrians are doing.

CONTROLLED STOP

You may be asked to carry out an Emergency Stop on your Driving Test. Your examiner will make you aware that they will be testing you on emergency stopping, it wont be a surprise during your driving test.

It's important to practise the emergency stop with your Driving Instructor so your reflex reaction becomes a habit. Bare in mind, an emergency stop in a manual car is slightly different to that in an automatic.

PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS

Pedestrian Crossings are a specified part of a road where pedestrians have right of way to cross the road. Pedestrian Crossings are something that you will encounter in your UK Practical Driving Test, so it is important to know the correct way to approach them.

In this tutorial, Francis the Instructor explains the importance of knowing the difference between Controlled and Uncontrolled Pedestrian Crossings and provides key points to help identify them, as well as guides you on how to use them.

DUAL CARRIAGEWAYS

Dual Carriageways are roads where you and oncoming traffic are separated by something physical, like a barrier, and usually have two or more lanes that are travelling in the same direction.

In this tutorial, Francis the Instructor explains Safe Driving Tips for Dual Carriageways to help you make sure that you are keeping yourself safe when driving at faster speeds. It is important to remember the appropriate following distance and to make sure that you are travelling in the correct lane.

LARGE ROUNDABOUTS

Large and Spiral Roundabouts are a major part of driving in the UK - suggesting that you may be asked to enter and exit one on your UK practical driving test.

In this video, Francis the Instructor explains how to enter and exit Large and Busy Roundabouts safely and effectively. Francis also explains how traffic lights and right of way rules are key factors in understanding how to manoeuvre effectively.

COUNTRY AND RURAL ROADS

Driving on Country or Rural Roads can be nerve-wracking with the shortage of road markings and high National Speed Limits.

In this Diving Tutorial, Francis the Instructor explains that while Driving on Country or Rural Roads, it is crucial to remember that the National Speed Limit is not mandatory, and to use proper judgement to avoid reckless driving. Don't Treat Rural Roads like a Race Track.

SAT NAV DRIVING

In this tutorial, Francis the Instructor explains What You Need to Know when using Sat Nav on a Driving Test. For those who don't know, Sat Nav is navigation information received from satellites and has been introduced to driving tests.

Francis covers what information Sat Nav gives you, what it shows you, how to use it, and what happens if Sat Nav is wrong. Having Sat Nav available to you on your Driving Test can be very helpful, if you know how to use it correctly.
